Lakes Course

Classic park character the Swedish way

Right from the opening, the Lakes Course has a timeless feel that demands its player. You play with the clubhouse at your back, looking out over the vast fields of Bara. The large lake borders holes 9, 17 and 18 and during the round you will meet both greens on the edge and half out in the lake. There are 74 bunkers on the Lakes Course, a few fewer than on the Links Course, but with a total bunker area almost three times as large. Here, bunkers are obstacles to be reckoned with.

There are seven different tees to choose from and tee 59, where the length of the course is just under 6000 meters, is considered sufficient for most people. In fact, you can advantageously and happily choose to play the course shorter. It’s easier to feel good about yourself then. The surrounding beech forest with its famous bright green in spring and with a colorful palette of yellow, brown and red when autumn comes. Wildlife is ever-present to those with their eyes open. Both roe deer and fallow deer can add further dimensions to the experience. And sometimes you wish that the gladiator who mostly hovers over the track could help find the ball in the rough.

The Lakes Course was inaugurated on May 29, 2010 by current European Tour winner Peter Hanson and course architect Kyle Phillips. In both 2014 and 2015, the Nordea Masters European tournament was played on the course and was praised by both players and spectators.

Track record

Both amateur and professional golfers have set impressive course records on the Lakes Course:

Women’s record: 66 strokes by Edit Hertzman(Gävle Golf Club) during Stenson Sunesson Junior Challenge 2021.

Men’s record: 61 strokes by Joakim Wikström(Hills Golfklubb) during the V-Sport Golf Challenge 2020 on the MoreGolf Mastercard Tour.

The first hole offers a relatively gentle start to your round.
There are several strategic options to choose from. A long drive down the slight slope allows you to comfortably play your second shot to the right of the massive bunkers and reach the green. Alternatively, you can lay up to the left and leave yourself with a short iron to the pin. By the way, take a moment to notice how pleasant the green is to putt on. That feeling stays with you throughout the round. Putting sets the tone—if you’re putting well, everything else feels more enjoyable.

The second hole offers a blind landing area for long hitters, sloping down toward the green. If you’re not a fan of uneven lies, it may be wise to stay on the flat part of the fairway before the slope begins. The green is inviting and well-protected, guarded by bunkers on both sides.

The third hole features a fairly generously wide fairway. The right side is the place to be. From there, you’ll have a much better view of the green for your second shot. Left means rough, bunkers, and a blind shot to the flag. If you’re going to miss the green, miss it to the right—left is a punishing area.

The fourth is one of the course’s most inviting holes, despite being a relatively long par three. The elevated tee gives you confidence, and the green area truly looks welcoming. But keep in mind—the green is very deep, so club selection can vary significantly.

The fifth hole offers a range of strategic options. If you’re confident with your driver, aim for the right side—you might be left with just a chip to the green. Alternatively laying up short in the middle of the fairway gives you a comfortable distance for a full wedge, a nine iron, or maybe even an eight. The green is elevated, so you might need an extra club. The bunkers on the right side, up the slope toward the green are deceptively closer than they appear from the tee—and definitely in play if you choose to hit driver. Aim for the center of the green, or even slightly to the right. The left side is a definite no-go.

The sixth hole—the second par three of the round—features a very wide green, but one that may require an extra club. The prevailing wind is straight into your face. Be cautious of the bunker left and behind the green, and keep in mind that the green is relatively shallow.

When you reach the seventh, the real challenges begin. You’re usually faced with a long second shot that demands exceptional precision. Bunkers guard the left side, while a challenging, extended runoff area awaits to the right. Definitely one of the three toughest holes on the course—though the next one is not far behind.

A par five where you’ll want a decent drive and an equally solid layup on your way to the flag. If you’re left with a short iron from the fairway, you’ll often feel like the green will receive the ball kindly. And it does—no surprises here.

A true test. The ninth hole on the Lakes Course ranks among the most challenging par fours in Sweden. Water runs along the entire right side for all 390 meters leading to the green. Bunkers wait on the left. A creek cuts across the fairway. The wind usually blows against you from the right. Lakes Course at its finest. Good luck!

The tenth hole features a green that’s very hard to find—but it’s also the only one without bunkers. Maybe that’s some consolation. The creek on the right can cause trouble and while the wind can be helpful, it usually comes slightly from the left.

The eleventh hole offers plenty of challenges—and exciting choices. Lay up to the left or to the right. The choice is yours. But hitting the fairway from the tee is crucial. The creek on the right runs all the way across the hole, ending to the left of the green—it can send shivers down the spine of anyone lacking confidence. In every aspect, it’s a truly great golf hole.

The twelfth is a relatively short par four. It plays uphill first, then downhill toward a well-bunkered green. Big hitters who manage to carry the ridge and catch the downslope may find themselves with just a chip left to the green.

The thirteenth hole more than lives up to the name of the course—Lakes Course. The bold player stays to the right of the large bunkers in the middle of the fairway. But it’s a risky line—the pond definitely comes into play and can cause trouble. Still, it’s a classic case of risk and reward: if you pull it off, you’re richly rewarded. The angle into the deceptively tricky green is ideal from the right side of the fairway.

The sixteenth hole presents many challenges. First, the fairway slopes much more to the left than it appears from the tee. If you don’t account for this, you risk a watery visit in the wide ditch. The approach to the deep green often requires a long iron or a hybrid. More often than not, the wind blows straight into your face, so the smart play is to lay up just short of the left edge, setting yourself up to chip or putt your third shot. Defensive? Sure—but no safer strategy. Take a grateful moment to remember the birdie on the fourteenth.

The finishing stretch has all the potential to become a classic in Swedish golf. The seventeenth, a signature hole of the Lakes Course, is a long par three all the way over water. Aim for the center of the green—or play it safe with a short, dry shot to the right.

The finishing hole. You probably noticed the green to the left, just beside the clubhouse, when you arrived at the facility? Good! Then you know you should play safe to the right on your approach. In fact, you should stay right all the way. Left of the center of the fairway can mean trouble—once again, the slope is much steeper than you think, leading down to the pesky water hazard. Many matches will be decided here.
